A quick history of Porto Six Bridges

Tour guide explaining to tourists on Douro River cruise with Arrábida Bridge in Porto.
  • Porto’s six bridges aren’t just convenient river crossings; they’re milestones in the city’s growth. The oldest, Ponte Maria Pia, was a wrought-iron railway bridge dreamed up by Gustave Eiffel in 1877, ushering in a new era of trade.
  • Then came Ponte Dom Luís I in 1886, with its iconic double deck that still makes photographers swoon.
  • The sleek concrete arcs of Ponte Arrábida and Ponte do Freixo brought the city into the modern age, while Ponte de São João replaced the old railway link with an elegant, minimalist sweep.
  • Finally, Ponte do Infante, the youngest of the bunch, debuted in 2003—proof that Porto still knows how to make an entrance.
  • On a Six Bridges river cruise Porto, you’re not just drifting under metal and stone, you’re gliding through 150 years of engineering ambition.

Ponte Dom Luís I

Built in 1886 by a student of Eiffel, this iron diva didn’t just connect Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia, it became the selfie spot. From the river, her giant arch makes you feel like you’re sailing through Porto’s front door.

Ponte Infante Dom Henrique

She’s the new kid, born in 2003 to ease the city’s traffic tantrums. At 72 metres tall, she’s also the highest, which means sailing under her feels like gliding beneath a giant white bow in the sky.

Ponte Maria Pia

Eiffel’s 1877 masterpiece and Porto’s first railway link to Lisbon. She’s retired now, but she wears her slender iron arch like a vintage gown, best appreciated from the water, where her daring design still makes engineers nod in respect.

Ponte de São João

Replacing Maria Pia in 1991, this modern railway bridge is all clean lines and no fuss. From the boat, it’s fun to watch trains zip past while the Douro below barely ripples, a snapshot of Porto’s old-and-new harmony.

Ponte do Freixo

The longest of the lot and the least flashy, think of her as the bridge doing the quiet, important work. She stretches over the part of the Douro where the city starts to breathe, giving you open skies and a hint of countryside.

Ponte da Arrábida

Back in 1963, she was the world’s largest concrete arch, a big brag for Portugal. Gliding under her 70-metre-high sweep, you catch the first whiff of Atlantic salt air, the perfect mic-drop ending to your cruise.
