Entry to the Clérigos Tower

Whether you take the metro, bus, or walk to the Clérigos complex, you’ll be hard-pressed not to notice the Clérigos Tower in all its 75-meter-high glory. You’ll enter through the main church entrance, where your tickets will be validated, after which you can begin your ascent to the tower’s summit.

Climb the tower’s medieval stairs

As soon as you’re within the tower’s stunning Baroque structure, you’ll begin your climb up the 225 narrow and steep stairs. Along the way, you’ll get to peek out onto Porto’s skyline through little windows etched into the structure, giving you a different perspective as you keep gaining altitude. Keep in mind that traffic flows both ways, so carrying luggage isn’t advisable.

Reach the panoramic belfry

At the top, you’ll step onto the intimate belfry platform to capture a 360° view of Porto’s skyline and the winding Douro river below. The rewarding vista invites a pause before you gently descend, sealing your visit with an image that you’ll find hard to forget.

Explore the church and museum

If you’ve got more time on your hands, you can step into the Igreja dos Clérigos, or the Clérigos Church, and admire its elliptical nave and polychrome altarpiece. Nearby, the Casa da Irmandade or the Clérigos Museum houses curated liturgical artefacts and paintings.

Exit the Clérigos complex and explore nearby attractions

Besides the Clérigos complex’s incredible accessibility, its proximity to key landmarks like the Livraria Lello makes it perfect to simply hop over and explore more of Porto’s best. This iconic Gothic bookstore is a mere 120 meters away, making it worth the pitstop.

Booking window

  • The tickets to the Spiritus show are best booked at least 3-5 days in advance, or sometimes even a week before, especially during the peak season between May and September.
  • The same goes for the guided walking tour of the Clérigos Tower and Porto’s highlights.

Entry & access

  • The point of entry for both the Spiritus show and the guided tour is the church’s primary entrance, accessed via Rua de São Filipe de Nery.

What’s included

  • The tickets to the Spiritus show include entry to the Clérigos Church and to the 30-minute light and sound show.
  • If you choose the guided tour, your experience includes entry to the Clérigos Church, the Porto Cathedral, and the São Bento da Vitória Monastery. You get to choose a tour in one of seven languages, and you’ll be accompanied by an expert guide throughout. This experience also includes a secret tasting of the region’s most iconic delicacies and beverages.

Ways to explore

  • For an immersive experience that brings the church’s stunning Baroque architecture alive with a visual narrative, the tickets to the Spiritus show are your best bet.
  • On the other hand, if you want a deep-dive into Porto’s most important landmarks, besides its culture and culinary delights, the Clérigos Tower & Porto Highlights guided tour should be your pick.

Policies

  • Children under the age of 10 can enter the tower, church, and museum for free. However, they must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
  • The tower is not wheelchair accessible, but a multisensory experience at the church recreates the climb up to the top for those who find themselves unable to scale the tower themselves.
  • You must dress respectfully during your visit as you’ll be entering a religious site. Your clothes must cover your knees and shoulders, and must not be see-through.

Insider tips to make the most of your visit

  • Climb the tower during the church's lull window. Arrive right at opening and spend 10–15 minutes inside the church first. Most visitors head straight to the tower, so the initial climb queue forms immediately.
  • Use the descent for photos. The narrow staircase has small windows that frame Porto beautifully. Take photos on the way down when people move slower and you are not holding up traffic.
  • Skip midday in summer. The stone interior traps heat, and airflow is limited. Morning climbs feel significantly more comfortable than noon visits in warm months.
  • Enjoy the sunset without the crowds. Go up about 45 minutes before sunset instead of at sunset. You will see the golden light and avoid the peak rush at the top platform.
  • Look for Nasoni’s signature details. Inside the church, focus on the sculpted stonework near the altar and the tomb slab. Many visitors rush past without noticing the architect’s presence.
